iOS game alternatives for PuyoPuyo (Tetris like) outside Japan

I love the PuyoPuyo game concept (see Sega’s official page) and I’ve played it a lot on the Nintendo64. Outside of Japan it was released as e.g. Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, Kirby’s Avalanche / Kirby’s Ghost Trap and Puyo Pop Fever). Currently it’s 2016 and it’s still a very popular game (now also as an app) in Japan. In the US and Europe (outside of Japan) we had  ‘SEGA Columns Deluxe (with Puyo Pop)’ but SEGA pulled that app from the App Store unfortunately. It seems that SEGA did a soft-launch in e.g. Canada of the official game but then called it ‘Cranky Food Friends – a Delicious Drop & Match RPG’ (with fruit?) but it seems it was removed from the Canadian App Store see also this topic Unfortunately the official app  is only available in the Japanese iOS App Store (called Puyo Puyo Fever Touch, Puyo Puyo !! Quest (from SEGA) and in the Google Play market there is PuyoPuyo!, Puyo Puyo Quest and Puyo Touch option from SEGA and can’t be installed via the Dutch App Store (or e.g GB/US).

Some great forum topics about this great game can be found here, here

  • excellent control settings (gamepad on screen or touch certain areas of the screen)
  • great multi-play option against (friend) via internet,vs computer
  • almost perfect sounds like original PuyoPuyo, could use a bit more sound when you have multiple 4 in row after each other “should sound like: Na-na-na na-na-na”
  • could use a few translation fixes e.g. in the vs area it now indicates ‘ceate a room’ instead of ‘create a room’.
  • lacks in-app option to remove the ads (banner)
  • lacks iPad support/Universal support (works on iPad but not build for it)
